New conditioning
program juggles players' routines
BY DONNA CARTER

The Colorado
Xplosion looked as if it elected to take Election Day off yesterday.
The players were juggling at practice.
Actually the odd exercises that included
learning to juggle, use a slide board and do abdominal work and back
extensions while balancing on a huge "stability" ball, were all part
of a new conditioning program the team will institute this week before
it takes to the road for a game on Seattle on Saturday.
The Austin, Texas based company, Ironsmith Body, has chosen
to sponsor the Xplosion and train the players in techniques that it
believes will make them ABL champions. The Xplosion (3-4) moved out
of the Western conference cellar with a victory Sunday over New England.
"What we do is create skills necessary to play stronger and
longer and to stay in the game more years," said Sarah Scott, recognized
as one of America's best fitness trainers recently by Vogue Magazine.
Scott, a former body builder and collegiate track and field athlete,
created the company with Jennifer White, a trainer and former Louisiana
Tech basketball player and academic All-American who has coached at
Louisiana Tech and the University of Texas.
They analyze movement down to the most miniscule. "They told
us why Michael Jordan is always in balance when he shoots his jump
shots," assistant coach Dana Ewing said. "His hips don't rotate when
he's shooting."
Ironsmith chose the Xplosion of all the ABL teams because "they've
got everything going for them," Scott said. "The altitude, they're
lean and mean and they have the potential to run everyone else out
of the gym."
Traditional conditioning programs are geared to football players.
The two believe such programs are inappropriate for basketball players
- male or female.
They've borrowed from science, orthopedics, medicine, physics
and rehab to come up with a program that is geared toward injury prevention.
"It's called prehab," Scott said "It's all pro-active.
We don't wait for an injury to occur."
Xplosion coach Sheryl Estes discovered Ironsmith as a coach at Wayland
Baptist in Texas and wanted to hire the company even before the season
but couldn't afford it. Now the company has chosen Xplosion.
"We liked the feel and cohesiveness of this team," White said. "They
were very eager. They were saying, 'Give us more!' Not, 'Ah I know
what I'm doing'."
